3 Tips To Building Good Habits
So you’ve stumbled across this page looking for a miracle cure to becoming a good habit ninja. Unfortunately for you, there are no shortcuts to build and make good habits stick, however here are my 3 tips that may help you get started.
I’m a big believer in making your environment work for you. If you want to eat healthier, don’t put the chocolate biscuits in a place where you can see them every day, replace them with a healthier choice, or just don’t buy them altogether! If you want to get up early and exercise, get your gym clothes out the night before so they are the first thing you see when you wake up. Get a pump-up music track as your alarm so that when you wake, your environment is set for you to exercise. Setting up a positive environment that encourages the actions you want to do but need that extra push can be a huge win for starting and maintaining something new.
Have patience. Far too often we stop before we’ve really started. It's like digging for gold and then walking away when you’re just a couple more digs away from revealing that shiny metal. If you’ve never run a 5km before, the chances are you're not going to be able to run it in a week. And that’s okay. Take time with new habits and enjoy the gradual progress of improving at whatever you decide to take up.
Set a goal - no matter how big or small. Having goals allows us to focus on the wins when we hit them and keeps us moving in the right direction to hit them. Pretty sweet if you ask me. You can set a massive goal and work back, on set small milestones that culminate in something massive. Whatever you do, just make sure you set, reflect and then go big when you hit it.
